Recently I've become increasingly aware of the pain and darkness people carry. I feel it.

As I've been deeply moved I've painted prayers, inspired by light breaking through the darkness. 'The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them the light has shined.' Isaiah 9.2

Coupled with this process of praying and painting I've been wrestling with words from John's gospel about how the light of the world stepped down into our very darkness:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The painting is the meeting place of:

1) Carrying in prayer people's pain. Somehow vicariously bringing with mark making and colour, intercessions on behalf of those I am budened by.

2) Celebrating light shining in darkness and not being overcome by the darkness.

3) Combining the mystery of how God made flesh is also the one whom made all things. Galaxies, mountains, sinews and molecules, all things.

This painting has 12 layers of paint and varnishes, glues and lots of different materials and was created with over10 litres of water. I made it using pastels, acrylic inks, powder paints, brusho, acrylic paint and spray paints.

It measures 150cm by 100cm.
